Re: Briefcase Connection Issues

You don't see the Icon in red rectangle in attached file?

Re: vMotion and Shared vs Local Storage

VMFS datastore visible on 3 of 6 hosts. Remaining 3 hosts see the LUN, status is Mounted, but datastore is not visible.

As the title suggests, all hosts see the LUNs... can't figure out the issue. Below is a capture of the vmkernel.log captured from the server as it was doing a Rescan (which results in a loop of activity in the logfile and lasts 10+ minutes with no change to the storage).

The SAN is preesnting the LUNs and successfully... so it has to be host side. In an act of desperation, yesterday I reinstalled ESXi on one of the troubled hosts. It was able to see the datastores. Today, they were no longer visible.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks a bunch for the help

Just when think I might be getting a handle on this stuff I turn around and there is yet another piece of software to install and configure.

At this rate I might still be working on this in 2015!

@Thomsit Wow, it looks like it works!

The vmx-svga dropped from 30% CPU usage to 1 or 2%, but how could this be related which each other?

Thank you, but I've been able to export and import the packages-I was wondering if there was any more seamless path. The sync doesn't work between 4.1 and 5.1 VCO installs.

Ok, I'll give it a try.

The parentVMPath parameter expects the path to the VM from which you want to spawn the pool (obviously).

Such a path looks something like this: /MyDC/vm/MyVM

Where MyDC is the datacentername, the vm folder is the hidden folder that holds the VMs and Templates hierachy and finally the name of the VM itself.

If your master VM is deeper in the folder structure, just add the folders to the path.

Ex: /MyDC/vm/Folder1/Folder2/MyVM

The parentSnapshotPath is similar to the previous parameter, but obviously should point to the snapshot from which the pool should clone.

Alan has a nice function to retrieve the snapshotpath in Update and re-composure of View Pools.

The vmFolderPath is where the VMs that are created for the pool should be stored.

Again similar to the previous parameters, but now for the folder.

Ex: /MyDC/vm/PoolFolder

resourcePoolPath should point to a resourcepool.

Such a path will look something like this: /MyDC/host/MyCluster/Resources/MyResourcePool

Note that host and Resources are again hidden folders !

datastoreSpecs: this one is not the most obvious one.

It wants the full path to a datastore in a cluster as specified by a resource pool.

See the VVGetDatastorePath function presented in Determining Paths to vSphere Datastore Objects

The composer_ad_id wants the ID of the AD domain in which the composer is a member server.

You can get this through: Get-ComposerDomain | select composer_ad_id

As a side note, have a look at the PowerShell Integration with View 5.0 white paper. It's perhaps not intended for the latest View version,

but it explains some of the parameters a lot better than I could

Thank you LucD, I got the issue since a few months but I guess I did my search too quick before posting.

Now I sent the thread that said it is a known bug, to the vmware engineer that worked on my SR, and see if it goes anywhere.

Hi Jens,

Thanks a lot for your help. This is the information I can provide you.

I will discuss and come back if I can do something more about logs and configuration.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks again looking into this.

Thanks,

Chakri

You may also notice that VSA will cost you some space as each VM will be stored twice, each copy on each host. You must also use Raid1 on your hosts.

As said by weinstein5, VSA, as an extra feature, will cost you money and also, will cost you space. This should be considered in your build.

Hi Snowdog_2112,

Not sure of the following - so assuming ESX/ESXi builds etc but need to know

  • Exact build of ESX
  • Is this a new ESX host or was it working earlier
  • If this was working earlier, what changed
  • Is the hardware make and model and ESX patch levels same across working/non working hosts?

Try the following and see what works

  1. Log in to the host and do a services.sh restart
  2. If that does not work, disconnect the host from VC (do not remove it) and connect it back
  3. Check in BIOS events and clear BIOS events and see
  4. Reset the host Hardware Sensors from ESX hardware status and see
  5. If nothing else works, try a host reboot and/or BIOS upgrade to the latest build

Hey Mrenf,

Try the following

  1. vMotion the VM from one host to another and then check
  2. If that does not work, try taking a vSphere Client session direct to the ESX host that has the VM and open the console from that host and check
  3. If still does not work, just use RDP and log in to the VM and issue a reboot. Should come back fine post the reboot

Wow Thanks for the info.

So both of my hosts will have to have a copy of each VM?

VSA is not mentioned at all in the Lowe book.

Is it something that came out after 2011?
